{kitchen de ferrer} heart-shaped valentine noms.

What started off as a fun twist to our homemade Valentine's Day dinner about 6ish years ago has become a yearly tradition for me + V. We really turned this heart-shaped foodie thayng into a sport, with each year more ambitious than the last. This heart-shaped challenge is the reason why Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays of the year! Straight from our kitchen, here are Jincent's heart-shaped foodie noms of 2013:

1 -- Mini Red Velvet Cupcakes with Arrow.
I love this cupid's arrow concept from the original cakepopster genius, herself, Miss Bakerella!  A few changes from the Bakerella tutorial were made, like using skewers instead of lollipop sticks, as well as using a heart craft punch for the bigger hearts. The little hearts were quickly hand-drafted, then cut out. A gold sharpie to draw in the feather lines, tape to adhere the hearts to the skewers and Voila! From simple to spruced up cuppycake in minutes!

2 -- Heart-Shaped Strawberry Kabob.
These need no explaining. They really do look that easy!

3 -- Angel Sweet Tomato Hearts.
Another heart idea that needs no explaining. The 'recipe' by Eye Candy originally called for Cherry tomatoes, but our local grocery store didn't have any on hand. So we went with the next best thing. Still worked out! Looks like Cherry tomatoes, anyways!

4 -- Heart-Shaped Carrots.
So my carrot hearts didn't come out as nicely as Sophistimom's.  But that's ok. I like my wonky geometric hearts. They kinda look like V's. V for Vince. ;-)

5 -- Heart-Shaped Beef Pinwheels. (With Heart-Shaped Quinoa.)
This was all V. He was inspired by a heart-shaped cinnamon roll that I had stumbled upon and wanted to do a savory version. Shallot + Chive cheese, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, plank steak. All rolled into a heart-shaped pinwheel. Held together with toothpicks. A little ambitious for me, but like the aspiring gourmet chef that V is, he made it look easy. And it turned out ... well, let's just say I heart it. ;-)

Hope this inspires your own homemade Valentine's meal in the future! Keep it fun + heartilicious, my peoples!

lookbook // valentine's lunch date.

valentine's day outfit 2013.
valentine's day outfit 2013.
valentine's day outfit 2013.
F21 denim shirt, UO skirt, UO stockings, UO heels, F21 necklace.

Just something I wore for a Valentine's lunch date with the hubster. Albeit, it was spent at home over a home-cooked meal. (Hey, who doesn't dress up for that?) But I was determined to wear this ensemble out and so I waited and waited til dinner time rolled around. 7:30p. Boba at Coco's Cafe. Dinner at Ramen Tatsu-ya. Drive-In Movie Theater to cap off the evening. You bet I was ready. What I wasn't ready for was the drastic drop in temperature once the sun disappeared. Accompanied by a nice breeze. All courtesy of Mother Nature. I guess she didn't get the memo that it was Valentine's day, 'cause otherwise I wouldn't have made that quick outfit change into something warmer! Yo Mother Nature, let's get it right next year, yah?

{kitchen de ferrer} ombre valentine cake push pops.

ombre valentine cake push pops.
ombre valentine cake push pops.
ombre valentine cake push pops.
ombre valentine cake push pops. ombre valentine cake push pops.
ombre valentine cake push pops.
It's no secret I would rather take pictures of my food (and eat them!) than bake/cook them. And it's no secret I take even more pics when I actually do bake/cook. Hard work can do that to ya. In this case (if you couldn't already tell from the multitude of aftermath visuals), I worked hard! And pretty dang proud of it. =D

The making of a cake push pop, it seems, is pretty straightforward. Bake a sheet cake, level it off, cut circles out with push pop container, pipe in cream cheese icing in between cake layers. Sounds easy enough! The Jin version is slightly different. Bake mini cupcakes using a mini muffin pan instead! Once cooled, cut off the cupcake tops, leaving the bottom portions (perfect height and width!) to be squeezed into the push pop containers. No need to level off!

As for the ombre part, I opted for various Duncan Hines cake flavors. Red velvet, strawberry and yellow cake. Half the yellow cake batter I added food coloring (red, orange + yellow) to get that nice bright red color.

Aaand construct away! Cake, icing, cake, icing, etc. Top off with lip sprinkles. Perhaps take the decor step further with some washi tape fun. Makes for 'derrricious-looking' (as Hanh puts it) and 'what the hell these push pops are delicious' (as Eric puts it) Valentine treats for Jincent's closest Austin friends!

Hey Old School Longhorns circa early 2000s, Momoko is still here! Yes! That Momoko! And if you're like me, who hasn't been here in 10+ years, you get a lil curious. And nostalgic. After all, 2003 was a lifetime ago!

Skipping past the Sanrio paraphernalia (Yup! That's still there, too!) and straight to the food, hubster + I's lunch hommage consisted of Taro milk tea, Coffee milk tea with boba and 2 of THE best rice balls we've ever had in Austin. Salmon Avocado Rice Ball for me, Salmon Avocado Cream Cheese for V. Warm, tasty and ginormous individual portions. Win, win and win. Now this is the reason I'll be coming back! And it won't take me 10 years this time around!

Per Miss Jen Tabangcora's caption of her Macaron by Patisse Instagram pic:

"I know where to find Jin next time she's in Houston :) @jin_chu"

Oh, fa sho. Ain't gotta tell me twice. And so Little Chu + I moseyed on over to the newest, swankest, chicest macaron shoppe in Houston (by far!) this past weekend. Must be all that River Oaks juju vibin' and jivin' up in this patisserie. Everything looked almost too pretty to touch! But nevermind that. We came here for the macarons. ;-)

Just to be totally honest, we cop'd all the macaron flavors avail that day. And ate it all before we left the patisserie. =X Hey, the friendly reminder found inside one of the pastry boxes said to enjoy the goods in room temp. We had a full day's worth of errands to run afterwards and the macarons would have been sweating it out in the hot, hot car. We couldn't have that. Besides, it gave us ChuChu sisters enough time to chat with one of the store owners (Hi, Mohammed!) and take a gander around the shoppe.

With Coco Chai Tea in hand, we went to town with our macaron loot. Blueberry Vanilla Bean + Ferrero were JoJo's faves, Matcha Green Tea mine. But the ChuChu unanimous fave was this giant heart-shaped Lychee Raspberry macaron with Rose buttercream in all it's pink'd out glory. It took 10 heavenly bites, maybe 12, to finish off this gigantor of a macaron, and oh em gee was it mind-blowing delicious. I've read somewhere that the macarons here are 50 calories each and gluten-free. That's even more of a reason to come back. ;-)

3 days, 3 DIY projects.

Took a break from all the pic editing to do a few uber simple DIY projects in some of my favorite color combos. Got red, pink + gold hues on my mind!
DIY: february 2013 paint chip calender.
1 -- DIY February 2013 Paint Chip Calendar.
Other than using them as various gift tags, I finally found another use for all those extra paint chips I've collected. So diggin' this idea. It's simple (took 5 minutes), inexpensive (free!) and adds a pop of color to my inspiration mood board (pow!). Now if only they were Pantone! Le sigh!

Tip: It's all about the Glue Dots. Double-sided tape won't cut it!

DIY: valentine cards.
DIY: valentine cards.
2 -- DIY Valentine Cards.
For my closest gal pals in my life. =) This is what loads of brown cards, extra glittery gold birds from my wedding, leftover pink acrylic paint, a wine cork and a lil Mod Podge can do. It's as easy and straightforward as it looks!

DIY: birthday gift wrapping.
3 -- DIY Birthday Gift Wrapping.
I love the idea of buying a roll of brown paper (which has lasted me for years and shows no sign of running out anytime soon) and creating any design for any occasion at any time. For Liz's Birthday, an empty tube of toilet paper and pink acrylic paint was all I needed to guzzy up this brown paper. Red ombre nylon string to finish it off and voila! Only 10 minutes of my life came and went. =)

Til next DIY adventure, crafting homies!

kind words from a fellow creative, ms yi-xuan.

3.13.11 - adventures with yi-xuan
Yi-Xuan + I at Flip Happy Crepes and La Boite on 3.13.11.

I hope Yi-Xuan doesn't mind me sharing an excerpt of a kind message she sent me last night, but it really brightened up my Monday evening! Random messages like these puts a big cheesy smile on my face and reminds me of why I got back into blogging:

" ... love reading your blog posts as they are so inspirational to my 'sleeping' artsy side (if it ever exist) ... "

Awesomeness. That makes 2 people reading my blog! And yes, my dear Yi-Xuan, your artsy side does exists ... 1,000-fold! After all, she did shoot our Save the Date pics with that creative camera eye of hers! She's one of a handful of avid photographers I know who are passionate about capturing little moments of everything and anything. On a daily basis. Seriously, nothing speaks passionate hobbyist than that! And still have time to do same day edits and posts! Mad respect!

Check out her mesmerizing photojournalistic snaps of her travel and foodie adventures on her blog. Get ready to be mind-blown.
3.13.11 - adventures with yi-xuan
Aside from sharing my love of photography, she also loves food. A lot. And takes pictures of her food. A lot. Like I do. A woman after my food-loving heart!
3.13.11 - adventures with yi-xuan
Did I say we love food? =P
Food + Photography! Life is good.

With that said, ya know that saying, 'Everything I see becomes a photograph'? Yeaaah, you should see us in action. Nobody does non-stop trigger happy like we do! I'll spare you the loads of photo evidencia that we've taken within the 4 hours spent at Flip Happy Crepes and La Boite, but I ain't gonna lie, the numbers are in the hundreds. >.<

Anyways, thank you, thank you, thank you for the sweet words, Yi-Xuan!
